It was the year of 1985, in which Boyd Willat decided to create a completely ergonomic writing instrument. Before doing so, Willat cleared his mind of all previously conceived notions of writing instruments and asked the all important question, "What would make the hand feel most comfortable using a writing instrument?" Ten years later, in 1995, Sensa was introduced to the world.

Through ergonomics research, it was determined that an ideal weight could be created if properly counterbalanced. Therefore, an aeronautical alloy was selected for its strength, weight and unique properties that allow for both machining and high tolerance press fits. Next came experimentation with the materials for a grip and plasmium™ was developed. The interactive plasmium™ filled gripping system had a morphic reforming quality. This was possible through an interdependent relationship between the contour of the inner spindle, shape of the gripping section jacket and fluid characteristic of the plasmium™. The result was a truly ergonomic, comfortable grip, which reduced the overall stresses normally incurred through writing by over 50%.

The drive mechanism was designed to function with one hand for both convenience and to assist an injured percentage of the population. In order for this feature to function without upsetting the carefully calculated balance, a uniquely designed drive system was engineered within an incredibly small motor house. Even the clip was designed with form following function. The contour was engineered for a snag-free feature to protect clothing. The choice of materials was heat-tempered steel for a lifetime of exacting tension. As it enters the barrel the clip turns downward at a 180o angle and is press-fit between the barrel and internal motor house.

The refill was the most simple selection of all the many selections made for this writing instrument as there is nothing comparable to the pressurized refill designed for, and used, on all NASA manned space flights. Introduced by Fisher, the rear portion of the refill a shot of nitrogen is injected prior to capping which allows for the features of the pressurized refills which function: Even the coloring techniques in the original Sensa pens utilize the latest technologies. The aeronautical aluminum alloys are bathed in ultra high temperature vats which permanently heat infuse metallic color particles into the metal.

In 1996 Sensa introduced the world’s first Carbon Nickel Fiber pen. Carbon Fiber, heralded for its lightweight and tensile strength, is used extensively in the aerospace industry and as a primary material in the Stealth Bomber. Nickel-plated carbon fiber was developed for electrically sensitive components on the Space Shuttle. The fibers, woven together, create a lightweight, extremely durable writing instrument with a high-tech appeal.

Although Sensa is a relatively new company, it has managed to prove itself noteworthy amongst other companies of greater history as it continuously searches to find ways in creating the most comfortable pen.
